Newly licensed in Florida:  Learn about the emergency services legislation regarding involuntary committment protocols for providing care for persons with substanc abuse problems and mental illness.

Description:
Addiction is a disease where abstinence is difficult and often impossible to manage without outside help.  Individuals with severe mental illness or experiencing crisis episodes often will not decide to obtain care when it is needed.  It has long been recognized that legislation providing for the public to assist individuals who were unable to act on their own behalf would enable the access to the care they required. Adjudicated admissions however, do not guarantee successful outcomes. The state of Florida seeks to help persons elect voluntary services when possible and provide protections when they don’t. This course looks at the Florida laws that govern these types of treatment episodes and the steps in implementation for successful outcomes.
Objectives
1. Participants will be able to discuss the intent of both the Marchman and Baker Acts.
2. Participants will be able to define terms specific to the language of these laws.

4. Participants will be able to describe patient rights for both the Marchman and Baker Acts.
5. Participants will be able to complete the required reporting and documentation for persons receiving services under the Marchman and Baker Acts.
