Description:
The class discusses the complications of HIV disease and TB when coupled with the problem of substance abuse. This course is inclusive of the other risk behavior-related infectious communicable diseases. DHHS diagnostic guidelines for classification of HIV disease will be defined. Information is provided concerning various special populations including incidence and prevalence statistics. Important basic understanding regarding the stages of HIV retrovirus reproduction is provided and how antiretroviral agents (HIV medications) work to deter the virus is shown. HIV and TB testing tyes and recommendations are discussed. Opportunistic infections are identified. Tuberculosis infection intersects the AOD population as do several infectious communicable diseases (Hepatitis C, and STDs). A discussion about integrated care is provided and emphasized including infection control, universal precautions, and concluding with comments on Federal protections and requirements regarding reporting and disclosure.
Study Guide: The study guide for this class is based on ‘Treatment for HIV-Infected Alcohol and Other Drug Abusers” Treatment Improvement Protocol #15. Peter A. Selwyn, MD., M.P.H. and Steven L. Batki, M.D. Consensus CO-Chairs. US DHHS, SAMHSA, Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. This TIP is available at no cost online under the same title at the SAMHSA store. The study guide’s structure follows the TIP on which it is based but is substantially updated incorporating advances in the recent decade.
Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to describe three facets of comprehensive care to AOD, HIV populations.
2. Participants will be able to discuss HIV disease classification.
3. Participants will be able to define addiction.
4. Participants will be able to describe the continuum of care for addiction treatment.
5. Participants will be able to describe primary care for AOD/HIV clients.
6. Participants will be able to identify HIV opportunistic infections.
7. Participants will be able to describe five types of antiretroviral agents.
8. Participants will be able to discuss seven TB infection control precautions.
9. Participants will be able to list four broad categories of mental disorders in the AOD/HIV population.
10. Participants will be able to discuss pharmacologic treatment of mental disorders re: AOD/HIV clients.
11. Participants will be able to describe the stage of diagnosis model.
12. Participants will be able to describe four models of case management.
13. Participants will be able to discuss two federal initiatives that encouraged integrated care for AOD/HIV clients.
14. Participants will be able to classify legal issues for AOD/HIV clients into three groups.
