Formerly called HIV Update:  Title was changed to reflect that his course is a primer on HIV disease rather than an update.  Although it contains current information this course meets Florida and other state content requirements for basic HIV/AIDS education for all licensed counseling professionals.  

This 3 Credit HIV course satisfies the initial Florida licensure requirements for Psychology, Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Marriage & Family and Nursing.

This offering provides information on diagnosis criteria and treatment for HIV and AIDs-related illnesses.  A review of transmission modes, prevention issues, and at-risk behaviors is presented.  Issues specific to substance abusing HIV+ clients will be discussed, including information on growing at-risk populations. Universal precautions will be identified and discussed.  An overview of the new medication regimens and the issues facing patients in determining which regimen is appropriate.  This program provides the basic HIV education required in most states for all mental health, nursing, and addictions professional licensure and certification.

Purpose: This program is developed to specifically provide content requirements for basic HIV/AIDS education as it pertains to the counseling profession (from psychiatric/behavioral health nursing, licensed professional counselors, psychologists, employee assistance professionals, and addictions professionals). Learners can expect to understand HIV/AIDS transmission modes, general precautions, the opportunistic infections, high risk behaviors, at-risk populations, test protocol, DHHS criteria, antiretroviral agents and intervention regimen, resources and current update on incidence and prevalence.

 

Objectives:

1. Participants will be able describe why HIV is a retrovirus

2. Participants will be able to describe the action of various medications types on the replication process of the HIV retrovirus.

3. Participants will be able to discuss HAART therapy regimen and issues regarding its selection.

4. Participants will be able to describe opportunistic infections typical in HIV/AIDS illness.

5. Participants will be able to discuss the complication to care that substance abuse and dependency cause.

 

Training Agenda

Hour One: Statistics, incidence and prevalence, role of denial.

Hour Two: Replication of HIV virus and medication regimen and action.

Hour Three: Opportunistic Infection, addictions contraindications, and special populations Q & A by email or phone.
