Part One: Preventing Errors in Mental Health Practice 

Description: 

This two CE Credit course provides a continuing discussion form the prior offering “Behavioral Health Practice Errors” on practice errors in mental health.  Psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists and mental health counselors (and other allied health professionals) can expect to learn valuable information about patient safety, root cause analysis and error reduction and prevention.  In addition, JCAHO patient safety goals and the National Quality Forum’s ideas about patient safety practices are summarized.  Outcomes information from recent root cause analyses will identify critical prevention information in primary problems areas for mental health practice; namely communication, uniform standards, developing a safety culture, and documentation improvements.  An actual latent error situation is described with a commentary.

Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to identify three targeted problems that are a focus of quality improvement research.

2. Participants will be able to list the five core areas identified by JCAHO for error reduction.

3. Participants will be able to identify and discuss solutions for the three most prevalent root causes in mental health practice.

4. Participants will be able to define, automatic and rule-based mistakes, active and latent errors, incorrect and defective information, and legally sufficient information.

5. Participants will be able to describe a safety culture.

Agenda:

Hour One: Introduction: statistics and overview, Research present and future, JCAHO patient safety goals, Outcomes of root cause analyses in sentinel events in mental health, Delays in treatment, Suicide events.

Hour Two: Safety practices, Patient safety practices, Safety cultures, Communication and documentation solutions, Practical application case study.

Purpose:  To provide information to assist practitioners in reducing and avoiding practice errors.

 

Part Two: Florida Ethics & Statutes Affecting the Practice of Psychology: Confidentiality

Description:

This course presents a brief discussion of the ethical challenges to practicing psychologists in the area of confidentiality. The APA Code of ethics is reviewed as it pertains to confidentiality.  The study guide presents the limitations and responsibilities of the right to privacy of mental health and substance abuse patients.  Federal legislation (HIPPA and CFR 42Part Two) is also presented.   The course concludes with an update regarding Florida law affecting the practice of psychology.  This course meets the Florida content requirements for instruction in professional ethics and Florida statutes and rules affecting the practice of psychology.  

Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to identify the ethical challenges regarding confidentiality and patient rights to privacy.

2. Participants will be able to define relevant terminology specific to confidentiality.

3. Participants will be able to identify the APA ethics guidelines regarding protecting patient confidences.

4. Participants will be able to describe limitations of confidentiality.

5. Participants will be able to describe relevant statues and regulations affecting the practice of psychology in Florida.

Hour One: Ethical challenges to patient rights to confidentiality.

Hour Two: Terminology, ethics guidelines, limitations of confidentiality.

Hour Three: Florida statutes and regulations as they pertain to psychology.

Methods:  Pretest, study guide, posttest and evaluation, Q and A by email.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to acquaint psychologists with a refresher on ethical guidance in the area of patient rights to privacy and confidentiality.

 

Part Three:  Domestic Violence: Core Course

Description:

This is a core course on domestic violence (DV) / intimate partner violence (IPV); an approved curriculum for ALL mental health professionals, addiction professionals, nurses and allied health professions. The study will provide definitions of key terms and descriptions of various types of abuse.  Risk factors and information about various populations including, spouses, children, and the elderly will be presented. Profile information on both victims and perpetrators is provided.  Theories that attempt to explain violence are discussed.  Issues relevant to assessment including signs and symptoms, specific injuries and patterns of injury known to be associated with abuse, screening methods and tools, and counseling roles will be discussed.  Learners from US states will be provided with Internet resources to obtain state-by-state information on laws, and domestic violence resources. A Florida resources supplement is provided.  

Objectives:  

The participant will be able to:

1. Define relevant terminology pertaining to domestic violence/intimate partner violence.

2. Identify incidence and prevalence statistics on DV/IPV.

3. Identify risk factors for various types of abuse.

4. Describe the four life course theories of violence.

5. Describe critical aspects of assessment:  safety planning and lethality assessment.

6. Describe the support and advocacy role in domestic violence counseling.
