Preventing Errors in Mental health Practice Description:
This two CE Credit class provides a continuing discussion form the prior class “Behavioral Health Practice Errors” on practice errors in mental health.  Practitioners can expect to learn valuable information about patient safety, root cause analysis and error reduction and prevention.  Some highlights of the class include: identifying some of the recent quality improvement research in mental health.  In addition, JCAHO patient safety goals and the National Quality Forum’s ideas about patient safety practices are summarized; several new terms which define and describe problems and solutions are introduced.   Outcomes information from recent root cause analyses will identify critical prevention information in primary problems areas for mental health practice; namely communication, uniform standards, developing a safety culture, and documentation improvements. The class concludes with an actual latent error situation that the participant is invited to evaluate.  A discussion follows with which the learner may compare his or her own thoughts.
Objectives:
1.Participants will be identify three targeted problems that are a focus of quality improvement research.
2.Participants will be able to list the five core areas identified by JCAHO for error reduction.
3. Participants will be able to identify and discuss solutions for the three most prevalent root causes in mental health practice.
4. Participants will be able to define, automatic and rule-based mistakes, active and latent errors, incorrect and defective information, and legally sufficient information.
5. Participants will be able to describe a safety culture.

Hour One: Introduction: statistics and overview, Research present and future JCAHO patient safety goals, Outcomes of root cause analyses in sentinel events in mental health, Delays in treatment, Suicide events.
Hour Two: Safety practices, Patient safety practices, Safety cultures, Communication and documentation solutions, Practical application case study.

Ethics and Boundary Issues:  Confidentiality Description:
This course presents a brief discussion of the ethical challenges for mental health professionals in the area of confidentiality. The study guide presents the limitations and responsibilities of the right to privacy of mental health and substance abuse patients.  Federal legislation (HIPPA and CFR 42Part Two) is also presented. This course meets the Florida content requirements for instruction in professional ethics and boundary issues. Excellent ethics course for any mental health professional in U.S. and Canada.

Domestic Violence Update Description:  
Domestic violence has been identified by many states as an under reported and under addressed problem.  Through real-life, vantage points this course will overview the conversation on domestic violence as it has unfolded in the US. The discussion will provide incidence and prevalence information, historical perspective regarding legislative efforts to intervene on domestic violence, the consequences of these legislative actions and resources for practitioners.
Note:  If you are considering this course for initial licensure Domestic Violence course requirements please order the Domestic Violence Core Course or the Initial Licensure Combo Course.  This is an appropriate and approved course to meet Florida license renewal requirements for domestic violence education for psychologists, social workers, marriage and family therapists and mental health counselors as well as other allied health professionals.
