NEW  Advances are rapidly changing our understanding and awareness of this cluster of conditions.  Pracitioners will learn about observing for criteria, differential diagnosis, and gender related differences with thiese symptoms. 

Description:
This session focuses on the symptoms of dissociation and hyperarousal.  Many behavioral health patient populations are affected by problems in response to abuse, trauma, and neglect.  Many of these problems had their origins in childhood, most cause significant distress to social and occupational functioning. A discussion of the diagnostic criteria as well as proposed changes is included. These two prevailing symptoms and their gender specific manifestations will be addressed including treatment indications and care issues when substance abuse is present.  Several models for understanding these problems will be described and instruments that may be used to evaluate these problems.
Objectives: 
1. Participants will be able to define dissociation and hyperarousal.
2. Participants will be able to discuss the continuum of dissociative disorders.
3. Participants will be able to discuss the continuum of hyperarousal responses. 
4. Participants will be able to apply the diagnostic criteria for the dissociative disorders.
5. Participants will be able to describe several evidence-based models that constitute best practice intervention for dissociative disorders.
Agenda:  
Hour One: Introduction and definition of key terms.
Hour Two: Dissociation disorders diagnostic criteria. 
Hour Three: Dissociation .
Hour Four: Hyperarousal .
Hour Five: Evidence-based models .
