Description:

Using evidence-based literature this program overviews the evolution of the intersection of substance abuse disorders and co-occurring mental health and other problems. The course describes emerging treatment innovation for co-occurring disorder (COD) populations and changes in treatment delivery.  Included in the study will be definitions of key concepts, steps in screening and comprehensive assessment of COD clients.  Finally strategies for intervention will be discussed.  COD clients present challenges to the successful maintenance of a therapeutic relationship.  Best practice techniques are described for working with COD clients. 

Objectives:

Module One

1. Participants will be able to define co-occurring disorders.

2. Participants will be able to review evolution of the co-occurring disorders (COD) field and its relevance to participants’ practice.

Module Two

3. Participants will be able to define the following key terms:  Substance use disorders, Mental disorders, Clients, Treatment, Programs, Systems.

Module Three

4. Participants will be able to describe an approach to comprehensive assessment of clients with COD including screening and assessment.  

Module Four

5. Participants will be able to discuss guidelines for building successful therapeutic relationships.

6. Participants will be able to describe strategies maintaining a successful therapeutic relationship with a COD client. 

7. Participants will be able to describe techniques for working with clients with COD.
