A sometimes baffling condition for both parents and providers, this course sheds light on the current understanding of this problem and offers an assessment and intervetnion overview.

Description:

Attention Deficit Disorder remains an under-diagnosed problem.  Participants will learn the DSM criteria and assessment indicators for diagnosing four types of this presenting problem. In addition the discussion concerning DSM5 regarding ADHD will be presented.   Observable signs and symptoms, the incidence and prevalence of co-morbid disorders, and an overview of various evaluation tools will be described.  Learners will become familiar with four executive functioning skills that show evidence of dysfunction with Attention Deficit Disorder and be able to identify two areas of critical problem solving affected resulting in developmental lag.

Objectives:  

1. Participants will be able to discuss incidence and prevalence, etiology, and genetic aspects of Attention Deficit Disorder.

2. Participants will be able to list diagnostic criteria for Attention Deficit Disorder.

3. Participants will be able to discuss two theoretical models of attention deficit.  

4. Participants will be able to identify relevant executive function impairments. 

5. Participants will be able to identify the five most common co-morbid disorders that often accompany Attention Deficit Disorder.

Training Agenda:  

Hour One: Incidence, Prevalence, Definition, Etiology, Genetics.

Hour Two: Four Executive Skill Impairments.

Hour Three: Co-morbid conditions, Differential Diagnosis.

Methods: Pretest, study guide, posttest and evaluation

Purpose:  The purpose of this study is to provide a clinical overview of Attention Deficit Disorder.  This overview should equip counselors to better identify this problem and understand interventions and resources for helping individuals and families cope with the problems encountered.
