Description:

Beginning with a discussion on the NIDA definition of addiction this discussion will offer perspectives on the disease conceptualization of addiction. Commentary by Terry Gorski, and Alan Marlatt, as well as the Medical and Science Society provide robust contrasts for participants to consider in developing an understanding of addiction problems.  Current classification subtypes for addictions are also presented including historical subtypes originally described by Benjamin Rush, MD.  The six classifications of psychoactive drugs are presented including medical uses, street names, signs, and symptoms of low, moderate, and high doses, and including long term effects. 

Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to define addiction. 

2. Participants will be able to discuss the historic subtypes of alcoholism as described by Benjamin Rush and EM Jellinek.

3. Participants will be able to discuss a current addiction paradigm classifying addictions as primary, secondary and reactive.

Hour One: Definition of addiction.

Hour Two: Historic subtypes of alcoholism, Modern paradigm for classification of addiction.

Hour Three: NIDA principles of drug addiction treatment.

Purpose: To prepare practitioners to observe criteria for various substance abuse disorders and understand treatment  principles to be applied to patient care.
